THE CURE PORCH ON WHEELS
The Cure Porch on Wheels is a mobile model of a distinctive local architectural feature that will anchor arts and culture programs and foster community cohesion. An arts engagement project in partnership with the Village of Saranac Lake, the Cure Porch on Wheels will serve the residents of Saranac Lake, NY and the Adirondack region. The Cure Porch on Wheels will host diverse community-building programs in partnership with local government and other arts and culture organizations, serving as an oral history booth, pop-up museum space, art gallery, music stage, and more.
This project is in modeled upon a successful project to create a traveling porch in 2010 by artist Bryony Graham at Salem Art Works. In 2017, Historic Saranac Lake was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Design Grant to support the architectural design of the porch.
We're planning oral history interview sessions and related special events around topics that are fun and relevant to community identity. That means taking the porch to places like Paul Smith's College Visitor Interpretive Center, village parks, and local events such as HoboFest to engage with the people who make this village so diverse and interesting. The Cure Porch on Wheels will make trips to local schools to share interactive programming on local history with the region's children.
Local artists and craftspeople will make use of the space as a special mobile studio, gallery and art show booth. In addition, we are entering into unique partnerships with a variety of local organizations so that the Cure Porch on Wheels may be used by others for dynamic community outreach activities, writing workshops, radio broadcasts, public art shows, cultural tourism events, and beyond. Featuring a wheelchair lift to make it a fully accessible space, the Cure Porch on Wheels will provide Historic Saranac Lake with the opportunity to bring our exciting work into the community. Contact us to get involved!
We are excited to collaborate with local partner organizations, who will have the opportunity to use the Cure Porch on Wheels for important community outreach and activities. Partners include Adirondack Center for Writing, Saranac Lake Chamber of Commerce, Village of Saranac Lake, North Country Public Radio, Paul Smith's College VIC, and Traditional Arts in Upstate New York.
Recognizing the project as a replicable model for community engagement, the National Endowment for the Arts awarded HSL an ArtWorks Design grant in 2017. This design phase is the first part of a two-year plan to develop the Cure Porch on Wheels. The grant has enabled us to work with an engineer, draftsperson, and builders to plan and design the porch, as well as collaborate with partner organizations.
