The Cure Porch on Wheels is a mobile model of a distinctive local architectural feature that will anchor arts and culture programs and foster community cohesion. An arts engagement project in partnership with the Village of Saranac Lake, the Cure Porch on Wheels will serve the residents of Saranac Lake, NY and the Adirondack region. The Cure Porch on Wheels will host diverse community-building programs in partnership with local government and other arts and culture organizations, serving as an oral history booth, pop-up museum space, art gallery, music stage, and more.
We are excited to collaborate with local partner organizations, who will have the opportunity to use the Cure Porch on Wheels for important community outreach and activities. Partners include Adirondack Center for Writing, Saranac Lake Chamber of Commerce, Village of Saranac Lake, North Country Public Radio, Paul Smith's College VIC, and Traditional Arts in Upstate New York.
Recognizing the project as a replicable model for community engagement, the National Endowment for the Arts awarded HSL an ArtWorks Design grant in 2017. This design phase is the first part of a two-year plan to develop the Cure Porch on Wheels. The grant has enabled us to work with an engineer, draftsperson, and builders to plan and design the porch, as well as collaborate with partner organizations.
Now, we need to raise the funds necessary to facilitate construction. These costs include the vehicle the porch will be built on, staff, building materials and paying the amazing local craftspeople who will do the actual construction. Construction will take place starting in 2018 and we plan to have the porch on the road later in the year.
