On Memorial Day, 2009, Historic Saranac Lake unveiled a new exhibit, "The Great War: World War I in Saranac Lake" WWI, known as "the Great War," left an indelible mark on the people of Saranac Lake, especially those who served in the war or helped out on the home front. Many servicemen came home injured or “shell shocked,” having endured horrific conditions in the trenches. Some of our citizens were among the 15 million men who lost their lives in the War. Once peace was declared, servicemen who had contracted tuberculosis came to Saranac Lake for the fresh air cure. One of those men was John Baxter Black, for whom the room at the Saranac Laboratory was named. Historic Saranac Lake invites the public to partipate in the exhibit. Please contact us if you have stories, photographs, or artifacts you would like to share. The exhibit is open by appointment, 9:00-3:00, Monday - Friday. Call HSL at (518) 891-4606 to schedule a visit. School groups are welcome! |
With the opening of the new exhibits in 2009, HSL began the process of returning the laboratory to its unique position as the historical center of the village. We count on friends of Historic Saranac Lake to help us make this vision a reality. JOIN US►
