PROJECTS

The Traveling Porch Project

porch

In 2011, Hstoric Saranac Lake begins working to create a traveling cure porch – a movable, life-size model of this unique architectural feature of Saranac Lake.

A diverse group of community members is coming together to participate in this hands-on project to raise awareness about Saranac Lake’s architecture and history. This project is in collaboration with artist Bryony Graham and Salem Art Works and modeled upon their successful project to create a traveling porch in 2010.

School Outreach

students

In 2010, Historic Saranac Lake launched a major school outreach initiative. Our goal is to work with area teachers in order to inspire area youth to explore our local history.

Historic Saranac Lake leads tours of the Saranac Laboratory Museum, downtown, and area historic sites. We make in-class presentations and coodinate oral history projects. We host a summer workshop for teachers to create lessons around science and history in Saranac Lake.

Our education initiative is made possible by support by Kay and Marvin Best in memory of Ralph Kelly. See flyer.

In 1945 the great Hungarian composer Béla Bartók spent the last summer of his life in Saranac Lake, writing two pieces, his Third Piano Concerto and Viola Concerto. Sixty years later, Bartók's reputation has soared.

Through volunteer support and proceeds raised during our Bartók Summer Concert Series, Historic Saranac Lake worked to save the modest cabin, where Bartók stayed on Riverside Drive, from near collapse. Through this work HSL continues to celebrate the works of this renown composer and raise awareness about the cabin, Bartók's life in Saranac Lake, and his music. ABOUT BARTÓK CABIN

Saranac Laboratory

Historic Saranac Lake became the owner of the former Saranac Laboratory in 1998, and has since worked to restore the building as our offices and a muesum dedicated to interpreting Saranac Lake’s unique role as a pioneer center for research and treatment of tuberculosis. ABOUT SARANAC LABORATORY

Union Depot

Saranac Lake’s Union Depot was built in 1904 by the Delaware and Hudson Railroad, consolidating the passenger operations of the Chateaugay Railroad from the east, and the New York Central Railroad from the west.

The largest on the line north of Utica, Union Depot handled eighteen to twenty scheduled passenger trains per day during its busiest years, 1912 to 1940. The New York Central Railroad closed Union Depot in 1965, when passenger service ended. Historic Saranac Lake partnered with  the Village of Saranac Lake to restore and interpret the depot.

Completed in 1997-98 with the support of federal ISTEA funds, administered through New York State’s Department of Transportation, renewed tourist rail service was the goal.

Adirondack Scenic Railroad now operates the service to and from Union Depot. Follow the link to their web site for the most current schedule of events and times. ABOUT UNION DEPOT
